Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the purpose of the self-assessment tool?

The Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers has been designed by the Fair Work Convention to allow workers to assess how fair they think their workplace is, against the five dimensions of fair work.

The Tool also provides functionality for employers and trade unions to register and invite workers to assess how fair they think their workplace is. The lead user (employer or union) then receives aggregated fair work results, allowing employers and trade unions to understand workers' experiences and perceptions of fair work.

Another option for use is as part of a group of workers, who come together as a group to assess how fair they think their workplace is and receive aggregated fair work results for the group.

The overarching aim is that this helps workers, employers and trade unions assess and improve fair work practices at an organisational level, guided by workers’ views.

The Tool launched in June 2025, as part of a refresh to improve functionality and engagement, and it replaces the self-assessment tool previously launched by the Fair Work Convention in 2020.

2. How do I register to use the self-assessment tool?

On the home page, click ‘Register’ and choose the appropriate user type to begin the registration process.

You will be asked to verify your email address. The email may be sent to your spam/junk folders. If you are having issues with verification, please contact: fairworkconvention@gov.scot

3. How will my data be used?

Your data will only be used for the purposes of the self-assessment tool, as set out in the Privacy Notice.

If you are a worker who has been invited by a lead user (employer or union) to complete the tool, when fair work results are shared with the lead user your anonymity will be protected.

You can ask for your data to be removed at any time by contacting MTC Media Ltd, as set out in the Privacy Notice.

If you have any queries regarding the Privacy Notice please contact the Fair Work Convention: fairworkconvention@gov.scot

You can also contact the Scottish Government’s Data Protection Officer:

4. I’m a worker using the tool – why are you collecting demographic information?

When workers are invited by a lead user (employer or union) to use the tool, as part of the registration process, there is an optional demographic questionnaire. If over 10 responses to each demographic question category have been provided, then the lead user will be able to view fair work results filtered by demographic category – for example, they would be able to see the fair work ‘score’ for males and females.

This functionality is designed only for use in larger organisations, to ensure anonymity of individuals is protected. The purposes for this processing are set out in more detail in the Privacy Notice. Our aim is that lead users will be able to understand whether experiences of fair work vary by different groups of workers.

5. Will results from the self-assessment tool be used for research or analysis purposes?

No, the self-assessment tool is not a research exercise. Data that individual workers input is only processed to output their fair work score, and to allow employers/unions to understand (at a very high level) perceptions of fair work. We will not be analysing or using the data from individual answers for research or analysis.

As set out in the Privacy Notice, anonymised usage data will be shared with the Scottish Government and the Fair Work Convention to track usage and understand who is using the tool.

6. I’m an employer, but only have a small number of workers (under 10 staff) so I can’t see collective results through the employer route. How do I use the tool?

We set the minimum amount at 10 responses to protect individual workers anonymity.

You can invite your staff to use the tool through the Individual Worker route. Following this, you could encourage staff to share their reflections on fair work in a team meeting.

7. How does this tool align with the Fair Work Employer Support Tool?

The Fair Work Employer Support Tool is managed by Scottish Enterprise and exists to support employers to assess and benchmark workplace practices against the five dimensions of the Fair Work Framework.

The Fair Work Convention’s Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers has been designed to align with the Employer Support Tool, so that employers can use both tools together, for different purposes.

The Employer Support Tool focuses on the employer's perceptions of how they have embedded fair work in policy and practice, while the Self-Assessment Tool for Workers looks at how fair work is experienced and perceived in practice by workers.
